Dhow Safaris

The Tusitiri Dhow

Our liveaboard dhow is a restored traditional vessel based in the Lamu Archipelago. Dhows are wooden sailing boats originally built to carry exotic spices and goods along the Indian Ocean trade routes.

Tusitiri was hand-crafted in Lamu over 50 years ago and has since been meticulously restored by her owners into a majestic and luxurious vessel — ideal for families or small groups seeking a private experience amongst the beautiful and historic islands of the north Kenyan coast.

We run privately guided dhow expeditions along the north Kenyan coast, sailing from Lamu up through the archipelago to the wild, uninhabited shores of Kiwayu and the Kiunga Marine Reserve. Each trip is tailor-made — whether that means chasing reef breaks, snorkelling untouched coral gardens, sleeping on deserted beaches under canvas, or simply drifting between islands at the pace of the trade winds.

Tusitiri also serves as a mothership for our deep sea fishing safaris. Our sportfishing boat fleet run in convoy with the dhow, working the bluewater grounds off the archipelago by day and rendezvousing with her at anchor by evening, a rare combination of serious offshore fishing and proper liveaboard comfort.

This is the old way of travelling this coast: no fixed itinerary, no crowds, just the dhow, her crew, and a stretch of ocean that very few people ever see properly.
